Be Mine | Personal

I woke up.

“Valentines Day,” I thought to myself. I rolled over. No Michael. Hazy eyed and sleepy I crawled out of bed, pulled on an oversized sweatshirt and opened our bedroom door. Groggy (mostly from the fact that I had yet to drink my morning cup of coffee) I shuffled into the hallway. There, equal distance apart, a path of handwritten love notes leading me to the kitchen table. My eyes followed them up, up, to the most lovely flowers. A wrapped present sitting alluringly beside.

About this time, my senses starting to kick in. I turned the corner to find my Valentine making breakfast, cutting fruit and beating homemade whip cream. There he goes again. Making me feel like the most treasured, most beautiful, most cherished woman in the world. He knows I like surprises. (Okay, he knows I love them!) I opened my present. Smiling. Loved. A new coffee mug. (A tradition he started 5 years ago. Every Valentines Day a new mug). A “L” monogram. Vintage reds and grays. Just in time to be filled full of hazelnut coffee. Lots of sugar. Lots of cream.

“I have another surprise for you,” he said to me. Dimples smiling back at me. “But not till later.”

Hours passed. He had to let the “anticipation build.” (At least that’s what he said). “Close your eyes…hold out your hands….okay. Open them!” I looked down to see a Fossil wallet. Exactly what I had been wanting. Of course he knew.

We got dressed up. Royal blue dress, high heels and turquoise jewelry for me. Collared shirt, sweater and new tie for him. “Do I look okay?” I asked. “Perfect.” Then he gave me that look that told me he meant it. A dimly lit, hole in the wall, Italian meal. Holding hands across the table. This is the man I prayed for for years. I waited for. The man I guarded my heart for, yearned I would one day meet. He heard my prayers. He answered by giving me a man beyond my wildest dreams. Each day I realize what a joy it is to be his wife. To get to walk beside him in the average, ordinary days–and the charming, bewitching days like this one.

My first boyfriend. My first kiss. My first and only love forever.
