Thomas Family Pictures | Oak Knoll Park

Two doors down from us there lived a guy with quick wit and an eagerness to tell stories and a girl with a sweet spirit and a kind countenance. We were neighbors–neighbors that didn’t take long to become friends.

They always had extra eggs when I ran out and extra encouragement when we were down. Their home was always open. Their table was ours, ours was theirs. We shared memories, snow days and movie nights. We played board games and watched Star Wars marathons (that was the guys idea). We baked Christmas cookies and planned countless craft nights (that was the girls idea). Our dogs were friends, play mates. We watched each others apartment when the other was out of town. We ate dinners together, went to baseball games together and drove through the Christmas light show as we piled into one car together.

Then, as life normally does, it ended a stage for us. Not of friendship–mind you–but a stage of being neighbors. With tears we moved hours away, knowing whatever family we would be given next wouldn’t be the same as Molly and Spencer. But to counter balance something sad, something beautiful started as well. The beginning to a new phase. The one that would make them parents.

Elizabeth Diane.
Their great adventure.
Their firstborn. Their blue-eyed beauty. Their daughter.

The start to many firsts. Their learning experiences. Their family grew and their love grew more. In the evening light I got to watch them love each other well. Watch Spencer hold his daughter. Watch Molly laugh. Watch Elizabeth, curious at the world around her, take it all in. Our neighbors, our friends. In glowing warm light, I had the joy of being a part of yet another memory take place….
