My path crossed with Heather from Blue Thistle Cakes at Wild Hill Flowers styled shoot that we both had the joy of being a part of. (See it here!) I’m not exaggerating even a little when I tell you that from the minute I met Heather, I knew there was something special about her! She had a authentic, genuine, down to earth aura about her! She had a smile that I’m pretty sure never left her face! She told me about her husband who supported her so strongly in her dreams and came alongside her–saying over and over she’s sure she wouldn’t be where she is now without him (something I so connect with as that is Michael in my business!) But one thing that you couldn’t miss about her was the humble way she approached life and her business. Clearly, she was crazy talented….but never focused too long on herself or gloated in her accomplishments. It was refreshing. We talked for a good thirty minutes after the shoot and I’m pretty sure could’ve kept on for hours! Heather is the kind of person you meet and think, “Surely didn’t just get introduced!” I’m being honest with you when I say I wish all my brides could meet her!!! And so, it is my joy for you to meet my new friend, baker & fellow wedding vendor–Heather!
Where were you born and what brought you to Kansas City?
I was born and raised in Ladysmith Wisconsin (an itsy-bitsy town that you’ve most likely never heard of). I moved to Kansas city Almost 9 years ago to help my brother and Sister-in-law care for their newborn baby and help with meal planning, etc. while my sister-in-law went back to school and was working full-time. Little did I know I would meet my future husband here as well. So thankful I made that decision 9 years ago. 🙂
On your days off, what is your favorite way to spend your time?
Spending time outdoors is one of my favorite things in the world!!! Whether it be biking, canoeing, hiking, working in the garden, etc. I can never get enough of it!! I also adore my family and close friends so I jump at any opportunity to spend time with them as well. 🙂
What are three adjectives that you would use to describe yourself?
Faithful, sincere and compassionate
Where is your dream vacation?
Anywhere in the mountains!
What is your favorite thing about living in Kansas City?
I love all of the coffee shops and restaurants here that support and serve local food and drinks!
If you were given the option of coffee, tea or pop what would it be?
So if I had to pick just one of these drinks for the rest of my life, I would say tea. BUT coffee is a very close second. I drink both every day…coffee in the morning and herbal tea in the evenings.
What was your major in college?
I completed a two year online culinary course but am a self taught wedding cake decorator.
What other hobbies do you have?
Anything music,Singing, gardening, doing household projects (I know this technically isn’t a hobby but I’m ALWAYS wanting to work on projects around the house and somehow my husband and I haven’t run out of things to do yet. 😉
How did you get your start in cake decorating?
I’ve always LOVED to bake! I started at a very young age alongside my mother making all sorts of goodies from cookies, to breads to cakes!! When my oldest brother got engaged (almost 12 years ago now), he asked if I would make their wedding cake with my grandmother’s famous chocolate cake recipe! Of course I said ”yes”! I was a bit nervous (to say the least) so I went to the library and pulled out ALL of the wedding cake books I could get my hands on. Thanks to Martha Stewart, I learned SO much! From there, I was hooked and have been making wedding cakes ever since. 🙂
Was cake decorating something that you always wanted to do?
I didn’t know that I would be doing this as a full time career but I have always loved to bake for as long as I can remember. I thank my mother for allowing me limitless creativity in the kitchen. Sometimes when I think of all the times she would let me experiment in the kitchen, I can hardly believe it!!! Oh the messes I made!!! Also, thank goodness for my 4 brothers and dad who were my main taste testers. 😉
What is your favorite part about making wedding cakes?
I love the design aspect of it. I am constantly looking at different shapes, textures, colors etc.and thinking of how I can possibly incorporate these things into a wedding cake. I’m a bit obsessed.
