We drove down the dusty back road, Madison in the red Chevy truck. Summer breeze blowing from one open window through the other. Her now husband rode in the bed, one arm propped up on the side. Relaxed. Taking the moment in.
The road was tucked away from the guests, a secluded spot. Large overgrown trees grew on the right forming a kind of wall that barley touched what looked like the edge of the blue sky. To the left was a field full of corn stalks. Straight rows. Anyone would attest the farmer took pride in his work. Ahead lie nothing but a lonely hay bale or two alongside the gravel. And now, vows taken and rings exchanged, this time was theirs.
Smoke from the oversized barrel drifted from the barn. Brisket and chicken wings. Silver buckets full of ice cold beverages to make the warm Summer night enjoyable. Long tables lined the walkways. In the center of each was a piece of tree trunk with custom hand burned lettering. Family on both sides gathered. It was hard to tell who belonged to which side….that’s a good thing. And they danced. Cowboy boots and all.
This night, this summer night with sunflowers and line dances and family, these two became one.
