Am I Too Late to Book Newborn Photos? | Kansas City

What Every Mom Should Know

Wondering if you’ve missed the window for newborn photography? As a Kansas City newborn photographer with more than a decade of experience, I have good news—you are probably not too late. (You can also watch the video here!)

A question I hear from new parents is:

“My baby is already a few weeks old. Is it too late for newborn photos?”

The short answer?

No.

While many photographers recommend scheduling newborn photos within the first two weeks after birth (I agree that this is the sleepiest, snuggliest newborn photos), there are however several reasons waiting a little longer may be the best decision for your family.

The Traditional Newborn Photography Timeline

Most posed newborn sessions are photographed between 5 and 14 days old because babies tend to:

  • Sleep more deeply
  • Curl naturally into newborn poses
  • Settle more easily during the session

While this stage is wonderful, it’s far from your only opportunity to capture beautiful newborn memories.

Why Waiting a Few Weeks Can Actually Be Better

Every family is different. Over the years, I’ve found that many parents have a much more enjoyable experience when they schedule newborn photos a little later.

1. Older Siblings Have Time to Adjust

If this isn’t your first baby, bringing home a newborn is a huge adjustment for older brothers and sisters.

Giving your family a few extra weeks allows siblings to:

  • Feel more comfortable sharing mom and dad
  • Build a connection with the new baby
  • Be happier and more cooperative during family photos

Those authentic sibling moments are often worth the wait.

2. Mom Has More Time to Recover

Whether this is your first baby or your fifth, postpartum recovery looks different for everyone.

Waiting until your baby is three, four, or even six weeks old often means:

  • You’re moving more comfortably.
  • You’re feeling more confident.
  • You’re getting a little more sleep.
  • You’re able to enjoy the experience instead of simply surviving those first few days.

Your memories matter too—not just the baby’s.

3. You May Love Seeing Your Baby’s Eyes

During the first week or two, newborns spend much of their session sleeping.

If you’ve always imagined photos where your baby is looking at you with bright eyes, scheduling your session a little later can make that much more likely.

Those awake moments often become some of parents’ favorite images.

4. It’s Better to Book Than Skip the Session Entirely

This is probably the biggest thing I want every new mom to know.

Newborn photography is one of the most commonly regretted sessions that families don’t book.

Life after bringing home a baby is overwhelming.

Many parents assume they’ve missed the ideal window and decide not to schedule photos at all.

Months later, they often wish they had documented those tiny details—the little fingers, sleepy stretches, soft cheeks, and the way their baby fit perfectly in their arms.

Whether your baby is:

  • 10 days old
  • 3 weeks old
  • 4 weeks old
  • 5 weeks old
  • Even 6 weeks old

It’s almost always worth reaching out to ask.

Every baby is different, and beautiful newborn portraits are absolutely possible beyond the traditional two-week window.

When Should You Book Newborn Photos?

The best time to reserve your newborn session is during your second trimester or early third trimester so your photographer can plan around your due date.

But if your baby has already arrived, don’t panic.

Many photographers—including myself—can often accommodate babies who are several weeks old depending on availability.

The most important thing isn’t hitting a perfect age.

It’s preserving this incredibly short season before it passes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do newborn photos at one month old?

Yes. One-month-old babies can still make wonderful newborn photography subjects. Sessions may simply include more awake images and natural posing.

Is six weeks too old for newborn photos?

Not necessarily. Many photographers successfully photograph babies at four to six weeks old. Every baby develops differently, so it’s always worth asking.

What if I forgot to book newborn photos before my baby was born?

You’re not alone. Contact your photographer as soon as possible. Many photographers reserve flexibility in their schedules for newborns because birth dates are unpredictable.
