Why Noise Is A Good Thing | For the Wedding Photographer

If you’re a wedding photographer and you just read that title, you might be thinking, “Wait just a second Lacey! Don’t you want everyone to be listening to you, not making noise??”  To which I would answer a whole-hearted yes to both!

But for the sake of this post, noise is a GOOD thing!!!
Here’s what I mean…

If you’re shooting the entire wedding party portraits, you’re in the zone of instructing, posing and making sure that you light looks great! But you also want your images to showcase genuine emotion! And one of the best ways that I’ve found to do that is to make a little noise! There are two easy ways to get the noise up a little and produce natural reactions!

1) Have THEM Make the Noise
If you’re taking a group shot with everyone cheering, actually tell them you want to hear them! (I promise it will change the image!) If they’re candidly walking towards you, give them a topic of conversation to talk about. If you’re doing a bride and groom portrait, ask the groom to whisper his favorite thing about her in the bride’s ear. When they are talking with one another, engaging each other, you will always, always leave with images that feature genuine emotions, reactions & responses!

2) YOU Make the Noise
If you’re having a difficult time finding things for the bridal party to talk about (which normally doesn’t happy–but maybe it’s a group of introverts) then it’s your time to step up to the plate! Ask them questions! If you see a groomsmen doing something funny or engaging–call it out and say how much you love it! I promise others will follow suite! If the group of bridesmaids make a joke, laugh with them (hello beautiful smiles!)

I can promise you that when it gets a little noisy–you’ll always end that section of the day with images that truly capture the fun, romantic, spontaneous moments that your bride and groom are hoping to see!
